Moon Horses of 2019

This project came about in a succession of ideas. When I first heard of cultures naming moons that referenced the times in which they occur, I flirted with the idea of creating an year-long moon project, in which I would depict the moon according to the names it was given. The cyclical influences of nature worked for me in many ways. This thought sat there in my mind at the beginning of several years, but it seems that it wasn't quite the right fit for me.

I always came back to the horse.

Horses have been a primary to me for as long as I have had memory. And they've existed along the way in my life, sometimes taking center stage and others, drifting in the side pictures, there as a constant but not at the forefront. My art must, by the very definition of myself, include horses.

And so, these moon paintings started to build in my mind as mingling with horses.

But, I needed something else. I can surely walk out my door and photograph any of the five horses (well, four horses and one mini-donkey) who live at our place, but I was hoping for a way to involve people and their horses. Our bonds with our animals, regardless of our disciplines, are incredibly strong and complex. I wanted to expand my work with the community while exploring and building my skills to grasp the very essence of horses. The singular and honest depiction of each horse is my goal.

Thus, the Moon Horses of 2019 came into focus.

I would put out a call at the beginning of the new moon for people in the community to submit their horse as a possible subject for each lunar cycle of 2019. At the end of a full 24 hours, I randomly draw a horse to be the subject of that moon painting. Because interactions and experiences hold so much value, I will take my own set of photos of the horse, recording both the horse and the relative experiences of the time. Taking this information and compiling it with the vast input of the weather, land, personal and public happenings...well, that is where each painting becomes its own.

At the culmination of the lunar cycles of 2019, the work will be on display for viewing with a public reception and artist presentation (of some sort). I am fully expecting this project to take shape and evolve as necessary throughout the year, much as my own work tends to do during its processes. Updates will happen here, via Facebook, or on Instagram. Threads will be #urbaniakarts #moonhorses2019 .

I anxiously await what happens under each moon.
